Where to start?

You have just received a writing assignment from your professor. You are not sure what to make of it, and have no definite ideas about what to do. The question on your mind is, would this be a good time to visit the Writing Center?

Most certainly!

Our tutors will be happy to have a stimulating conversation and to learn what is happening in your academic life.

So take some pressure off your visits by coming in early to have a pleasant chat about the assignment, the course material, and your interests, while the deadline is still miles away.

But don’t come unprepared.

The next few slides will suggest preliminary activities (mostly thinking stuff) you should do on your own, before coming.

Finding a Topic for a Research Project or Paper

Premise

You must know something about something to write something more about it.

Increase what you know by

  • Reading (use library/online databases)

  • Conversation with peers and experts

  • Following public discussion (news, blogs, lectures, …)

Make sure to include serious discussion from different perspectives that will help you develop an opinion of your own.
