Compositional Interpretation

This is a short and very basic guide to Compositional Interpretation. It is meant to be introductory only and is best used with the assistance of an instructor, at least at first viewing. Its purpose is to encourage an initial critical analysis of pictures and paintings that focuses on component elements separately and in sequence.

This is a preliminary step to the holistic discussion and understanding of visual art that must follow. The whole is always more than just the sum of its parts, but understanding how those parts are constructed to act together on the viewer's imagination is a necessary step toward proper appreciation.
